Current Ballon d’Or holder Rodri Hernández has given his thoughts on who could succeed him as the world’s best player, pointing toward both Spain’s new generation and Paris Saint-Germain’s standout stars.
The Manchester City midfielder admitted he has personal preferences but stressed that performances this season may tip the balance elsewhere.
Rodri’s picks PSG’s stars for Ballon d'Or
Speaking at a press conference in Konya, Rodri made it clear that he would love to see the award go to a fellow Spaniard.
“Out of sympathy, I’d love for it to go to Lamine Yamal or Pedri,” he said, noting the potential of the Barcelona duo to lead Spain into a new era of success, “But based on sporting merit, maybe it’s between Ousmane or Vitinha,” he added.
However, the 28-year-old also acknowledged the dominance of Paris Saint-Germain this season, admitting that it is “hard not to give it to one of their players.”
He noted Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha as two names who, in his opinion, have shown the form worthy of Ballon d’Or recognition.
Rodri reflects on his Ballon d'Or journey
Rodri also shared what winning the Ballon d’Or meant to him personally, especially after recovering from a difficult knee injury that disrupted his year.
“The Ballon d’Or was a breath of oxygen at a time when I was really struggling,” he admitted, while also insisting that he remains focused on the future rather than past accolades.
“I’m happy with the recognition, but it means nothing to me now. I just want to enjoy football again.” With his comments, the Spanish midfielder not only opened up about his own resilience but also fuelled debate about the next recipient of football’s most prestigious individual prize.
