Baller of the Week: Osimhen beats Super Eagles teammate who dethroned him

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has reclaimed his title as the Baller of the Week after a spectacular performance that saw him score twice in Galatasaray's dominant 5-1 victory over Kayserispor in the Turkish Super Lig. 

This impressive display marked his return to first-team action following a brief injury layoff and allowed him to outshine his fellow Super Eagles teammate, Ademola Lookman, who recently dethroned him as the 2024 African Player of the Year.

As reported by Naija Stars Abroad, Osimhen stood out amongst Nigerians and for the Lions, as he led the Turkish champions to a comfortable 5-1 away win on Sunday. 

He opened the scoring with a precise penalty just four minutes into the game before extending their lead to 4-1 with his second of the game, a well-timed and top-class finish in the 71st minute, solidifying his status as a key player for the team. 

His contributions extended beyond scoring; he created three chances and made three key passes, demonstrating his all-around abilities as a centre-forward.

Lookman, on the other hand, also had a noteworthy outing for Atalanta, where he scored in their 3-2 win against Empoli, his first game as Africa’s finest player.

 The 27-year-old Nigerian forward celebrated his recent accolade with fans before netting his ninth goal of the Serie A season fantastically.

However, despite his strong performance—where he created two chances and completed three dribbles—Lookman's efforts fell short of eclipsing Osimhen's stellar display.

Osimhen's return is particularly significant for Galatasaray, who are currently at the top of the league table. His two goals against Kayserispor not only bring his tally to nine league goals this season but also earn him a second Baller of the Week award for the season. 

This further solidifies his impact since joining Galatasaray from SSC Napoli. With performances like this, Osimhen not only reclaims the spotlight but also sends a clear message to rivals that he remains a formidable force in European football.
