Arsenal suffer bad case of 'FIFA virus' as star defender suffers international break injury
Arsenal have suffered a major hit, as starting centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes sustained an injury while representing Brazil in the ongoing international break.
What happened
Gabriel left the pitch injured in the 64th minute of a friendly for Brazil against the Teranga Lions of Senegal. Interestingly, he sustained the injury at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal's home ground, as that was the venue of the friendly.
He pulled up with discomfort in his right thigh/adductor region and was summarily replaced. Early reports suggest an issue inside his thigh. He was replaced by Wesley Moraes and has been sent for medical scans.
Big blow for Arsenal
Arsenal and their fans are naturally concerned given Gabriel’s key role. He has been crucial throughout the early part of the 2025-26 Premier League season as a centre-back and aerial threat.
He has been an integral factor in the Arsenal defence that has kept seven clean sheets in 11 Premier League games this season. He is also crucial to their attacking play, as the most dangerous weapon in their set-piece arsenal.
The timing is particularly unfortunate ahead of high-stakes fixtures, and while the exact prognosis is not yet clear, early commentary from Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti suggests the medical team will perform full checks “tomorrow” to determine how serious the problem is.
