Al Hilal vs Al-Nassr: Fans react as Ronaldo burst into tears after losing King's Cup final
A video of Cristiano Ronaldo bawling his eyes out after losing the King's Cup final to direct rivals Al-Hilal is making the rounds on the internet, attracting a myriad of comments.
The 37-year-old is still chasing his first major silverware for the Faris Najd, and today he came agonisingly close to breaking the trophy duck, losing on penalty shootouts to Jorge Jesus's charges.
What happened
Al Nassr reached the semi-finals of the King's Cup last season, losing to Al-Wehda. This term, they went a step further, facing league champions Al-Hilal in the final.
Al-Za’eem’s top scorer this season, Aleksandar Mitrovic, opened the scoring in the seventh minute. The league champions looked set to coast to victory when a red card was shown to Al-Nassr goalkeeper David Ospina for handling the ball outside his area; however, late drama ensued when both of Al-Hilal’s starting centre backs were shown red, and Ronaldo's team capitalised.
Ali Albulahyi saw red in the 77th minute, and Al-Nassr equalised almost immediately, thanks to an Ayman Ahmed strike. Kalidou Koulibaly, Al-Hilal's second starting centre back, also saw red a couple of minutes later, and momentum swung completely.
Despite their best efforts, Al-Nassr could not capitalise on the numerical advantage during extra-time to snatch a win, forcing the game to be settled via shootouts.
Both teams missed their first attempts, scored the next four, and missed their sixth. It was in the seventh round, they were separated when Al-Nemer missed his attempt and Al-Dawsari scored his to hand Al-Hilal the title.
