Akani Simbine: How Marriage Helped South Africa's Fastest Man 'Run Free' and Enjoy His Career Again
Akani Simbine has opened up about how his life has evolved since marrying his long-term partner, Terisa Webb, on December 7, 2024, at Quoin Rock Wine Estate.
The South African sprint star entered this new chapter fresh off an impressive season, highlighted by anchoring the men’s 4x100m relay team to a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games.
Akani Simbine revealed that since the wedding, his mindset and overall approach to both life and competition have shifted significantly.
Akani Simbine: I’m No Longer Chasing Medals
Speaking after Team South Africa claimed a silver medal in the men’s 4x100m relay at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, Akani Simbine shared that since his 2024 wedding, that phase of his life provided an environment that allowed him to mature both personally and professionally.
He explained that having a strong support system at home, including his spouse and relatives, brought him a sense of stability and appreciation, especially as they continue to stand behind him and his journey in athletics.
The 2025 world indoor 60m bronze medallist added that his partner embraced his career despite initially having little familiarity with the sport, and is gradually gaining a deeper understanding while remaining fully supportive of his ambitions.
Akani Simbine noted that this experience contributed positively to his personal development, helping him become more grounded and self-aware, while acknowledging that he is still in the process of learning and improving in different aspects of his life.
“It’s been a space where I have been able to grow. I have my wife, my family, and I have my own home, and I’m really grateful for them because they support me and they support this career of mine,” Akani Simbine said.
“My wife got into the sport not knowing anything, and she is still learning about it while also supporting me. It has helped me grow and helped me become a better person, and there are things I’m still learning.”
Akani Simbine added that his journey continues to be defined by personal development and a shift in perspective, noting that he has moved away from the pressure of constantly trying to secure accolades or validate his status.
Simbine that he now allows his performances to reflect his ability, rather than feeling the need to prove himself. He pointed out that his approach to racing has become more relaxed and enjoyable, as he focuses on competing with freedom and appreciating the support he receives from fans throughout his long career.
“Since 2024, it has been growth, and I’ve also let go of the thing of chasing medals and having to prove to the world that I am this great sprinter when my results can speak for themselves,” Akani Simbine added.
“It’s just me running free and being on the track and just feeling the love of everybody that supports me in this long career that I didn’t even plan. It was God's gift and God's plan for me.”
