AFCON 2027 Official Dates Confirmed as East Africa Ramps Up Preparations
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania can now intensify their preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations knowing when the tournament will be held.
Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has insisted the tournament will not be moved to 2028 or taken away from East Africa and also confirmed that it will be held between June and July 2027.
However, there was no confirmation on the exact dates, something that has now become clear following a statement from Uganda’s AFCON 2027 Local Organising Committee on Tuesday.

While briefing the media, the Uganda AFCON 2027 LOC confirmed that the tournament will be staged from June 19-July 18, 2027, bringing back the summer dates that are favoured by European clubs and last witnessed during the 2019 tournament.
AFCON had reverted to the January-February dates for the 2021, 2023 and 2025 tournaments but the June-July dates means there will be no mid-season disruptions for European teams, who lose key players to the tournament, as it will be held in the off-season.
With that confirmation, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have their work cut out when it comes to preparations as according to a recent CAF inspection report, the region is still behind schedule on stadiums and training facilities required to host the tournament.
Stadia/Training Facilities Behind Schedule
In Uganda, the Mandela national Stadium (Namboole Stadium) was cited as behind schedule in upgrades while Hoima City Stadium has several deficiencies despite being a newly-built facility. There are also concerns over the lack of high-end hotels in the Bunyoro region where the Hoima Stadium is located.
Meanwhile, in Kenya, Kasarani and Talanta Stadiums, the two venues earmarked to host matches, are behind schedule while the upgrade on training facilities is yet to start and in Tanzania, the story is the same.
AFCON 2027 will witness an expansion to 28 teams from 24, adding an extra layer of pressure to the host nations.
