Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and will need to be up to standard after what has been witnessed in Morocco as well as in Ivory Coast in the 2023 edition.

With that in mind, the Kenyan government, which is close to completing the new 60,000-seater Talanta Stadium, the main venue for the games, is now looking at improving travel logistics for fans during the tournament.

Fans had already raised concerns over traffic snarl-ups during the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) following road closures during the matches with a worry that the situation could be worse during AFCON 2027.

New Railway Line to Nyayo and Talanta Stadiums

In a bid to solve this, the Kenyan government, intends to improve railway connectivity to Talanta Stadium, Nyayo and Kasarani Stadiums which will ease transport and boost fan experience.

Kenya Railways has announced plans regarding the development of the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service that will see a railway station constructed adjacent to Nyayo Stadium, alongside a new spur line running from Nairobi Central Station through Kibera, extending towards Talanta Stadium.

The Nairobi Central–Limuru commuter corridor has cited as a viable route for the spur line, which will ease spectators, officials and workers’ movement during the tournament while reducing pressure on the roads.

“The development of the rail spur line is aimed at providing an effective transport solution that will ensure easy access to and from the venues of the soccer event,” Kenya Railways said via a statement.

“The spur line will guarantee commuters a safe, reliable and affordable transport option, thus ensuring ease of movement during AFCON 2027.”

Demolitions have already started on illegal structures which stand on the railway corridor with notices issued to owners to vacate before the bulldozers roll in.

Talanta and Kasarani Stadium will be the two host venues for AFCON 2027 matches in Kenya while Nyayo Stadium will act as one of the training venues.
