Bayern Munich have successfully defended their Bundesliga title for the 11th time after a dramatic end to the season on the final day.
Bayern survived a scare to see off Koln 2-1 away from home while Borussia Dortmund suffered heartbreak on the final day of the Bundesliga season after a total collapse at home to Mainz.
The Black and Yellow dropped two points on the decisive final day of the season following a 2-2 draw at home to Mainz on Saturday.
Dortmund went into the last day of the Bundesliga season with a two-point cushion. At the same time, the Bavarians needed to win and hoped the Yellows dropped points to claim another title.
In the end, Dortmund were forced to a draw after coming from two goals down, with Bayern seeing off Koln for an 11th consecutive title.
Here are three stats that show Thomas Tuchel’s Bavarians were always going to win on the final day, with additional stats from Bundesliga.
15 different scorers for Bayern Munich
Heading into the final day of the season, Bayern boasted scorers everywhere with a total of 15 different scorers since the club moved on from Robert Lewandowski.
Three of those 15 were on double figures ahead of the decisive season finale against Koln, with one of them, Jamaal Musiala coming up clutch with the all-important winner.
Musiala’s 89th-minute winner was his 12th of the season in the Bundesliga and easily the most important of the season.
Goal difference
With 15 different scorers, three of who were in double figures, Bayern were the Bundesliga premium entertainers this season with 90 goals scored heading into the game against Koln.
The Bavarians also had the best defense of the two sides, with 37 goals conceded compared to 42 for Dortmund which gave the champions a comfortable goal difference of +53 goals.
Bayern had taken advantage of BVB twice this season
Bayern went into the final day in a position they had already been in twice this season and came out flying on both occasions.
Dortmund dropped five points on Matchdays 26 and 30 and Bayern took advantage to reclaim top spot on those days.
Also, the Bavarians had a perfect record this season of positive response after losing the previous matchday which gave them confidence against Koln.
