British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua had his phone stolen at the scene of a car crash that killed two of his friends while on a visit to Nigeria on Monday.

The family of former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has condemned the actions of bystanders at the scene of a tragic car accident that killed two of the boxer's close friends, revealing his phone was stolen amidst the chaos.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Joshua's uncle, Adedamola Joshua, described the incident as "devastating," noting it occurred just six hours after the boxer arrived in Nigeria for his traditional festive season visit.

Adedamola Joshua explained that the family was unaware of the crash for hours, as many are not active on social media. He was first alerted to the shocking news around 1 pm by a retired police official from his church.

According to his uncle, the boxer had been eager to reunite with family in Sagamu, Ogun State, and had deliberately avoided social engagements in Lagos to prioritise family time. The tragedy has since plunged the entire family into deep mourning.

Joshua’s Family Slams Slow Response

"The timing is particularly painful," Adedamola Joshua stated as quoted by Nigeria’s PM News, emphasising that Joshua had visited Nigeria many times without incident, which made the accident even harder to accept.

The family also criticised Nigeria's emergency response system, expressing distress over images that showed the boxer walking across the highway median after the crash. "He should have been immediately placed on a stretcher and taken to the hospital by ambulance," his uncle insisted, contrasting the situation with the rapid response, including air ambulances, expected in other countries.

He called on the government to station more ambulances along accident-prone highways rather than focusing solely on document checks by road safety officials.

Driver Charged With Dangerous Driving

The family was particularly critical of the public's behaviour at the scene, accusing some individuals of filming the victims instead of providing aid. Adedamola Joshua disclosed that the boxer's phone was stolen during the confusion, calling the act "shameful and unacceptable."

Regarding the driver involved, Adedamola Joshua said he had no personal knowledge of him but noted concerning reports that he may have been speeding while attempting to overtake another vehicle.

The driver, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, was charged on Friday with police sources telling the BBC the charges included causing death by dangerous driving.

Joshua's personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, died on Monday after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a stationary truck on a highway in Ogun state, near Lagos.
