Swift return of Safari Rally director after reported resignation, following interventions by FIA, WRC Promoter

WRC Safari Rally event director Jim Kahumbura has made a rapid return to the forefront of the Safari Rally organization mere hours after his reported resignation shook the motorsport community.

The swift reinstatement came following decisive interventions by the FIA, WRC Promoter, and notably, Kenyan President William Ruto, highlighting the importance of Kahumbura's role in the iconic event.

Kahumbura's temporary exit was reported by TV 47 on Friday afternoon, with some reliable sources citing pressure from a "top official" within Kenya's Ministry of Sports.

In a significant development on Monday, Kahumbura met with President William Ruto at State House Nairobi.

Their discussion, aimed at briefing the president on the event's readiness, was later shared with the public through Ruto's enthusiastic tweet.

"WRC Safari Rally is here with us again. Top global drivers are already in Naivasha preparing for the world's toughest duel involving man, machine, and terrain this Easter weekend," the tweet reads.

Kahumbura's leadership has been pivotal in implementing notable changes for this year's WRC Safari Rally, enhancing both the competitive and spectator experience.

The relocation of the event's start to the iconic Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC) on March 28th, 2024, promises to centralize the thrill in Nairobi's heart, making it more accessible to fans and participants alike.

Moreover, his strategic decision to offer free access to the Kasarani stage and organize meet-and-greet sessions en route to Naivasha at Buffalo Mall reflects a deep commitment to fan engagement.

Under Kahumbura's guidance, logistical improvements have also been made, including moving the award ceremony to Hell's Gate, which doubles as the final power stage, to alleviate traffic congestion seen in previous years.

His return signals a positive momentum for the Safari Rally, renowned for its challenging terrain and unpredictable weather, ensuring the event's continuity as a premier fixture in the global motorsport calendar.
