The event is scheduled for June 22 to 25 in Naivasha, Nakuru County.

Ministry of Youth Affairs, Arts and Sports Principal Secretary Jonathan Mueke has revealed that the progress towards hosting the World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally is on the right course.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, June 22 to Sunday, 25 in Naivasha, Nakuru County, and Mueke noted that they are keen to stage a successful show.

In February, the Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba appointed rally star Carl ‘Flash’ Tundo to chair the Local Organising Committee (LOC). Mueke noted that the team is burning the midnight oil to ensure things fall into place.

“We put together a very cooperative LOC for the Safari Rally…it has very experienced people in running the rally,” he told NTV Sport.

The PS added that the promoters of the event, WRC, are in the country this week and they have already checked the route the rally will be taking. He added that they have also checked the pavilion which is a key facility for the rally.

He said the promoters have also checked the flagging off point of the rally (Uhuru Park Gardens) and everything is on course.

Mueke also revealed that most of the funding to be invested in making the rally a successful event will be released in the course of this week.

“They have also gone through the flagging point of the rally and I must admit that everything is set. Most of the funding for the rally will come out this week. I think we are moving along pretty well and we believe we shall stage a good event,” he added.

He was also bullish about Kenya hosting the event saying it is one of the most watched events in the whole world.

During last year’s event, Kalle Rovanpera of Finland who was competing in a Toyota Gazoo took top honours of the event as Elfyn Evans of the United Kingdom settled for second place. Japan’s Takamoto Kasutsa finished third.
