Regulator taking proactive approach ahead of festive season.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has kicked out a countrywide campaign to enhance road safety among boda boda riders and the passengers as the nation enters into the festive season.

The regulator has noted the mad rush exhibited on the roads by riders racing to beat their competitors to more pillion passengers and money.

The inaugural exercise that took place in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County on Friday September 29, 2023 saw the riders take lessons on road safety from NTSA through tutorials which majorly focused on staying safe as well as ensuring that the passengers are safe.

NTSA stressed on the use of safety equipment especially helmets and reflectors in their line of duty. The campaign that aims to reach out to boda boda riders across the 47 counties is a joint effort between the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and Gaming firm Pakakumi.

NTSA statistics show that boda bodas contributed to the highest fatalities in our roads with pedestrians coming in second.

“I want us to agree on one thing. Safety begins with you boda boda riders. You cannot carry a 200 kilogram luggage and a passenger and expect to be safe,” NTSA Eldoret’s Isaac Bitok.

He added,” 1200 riders die from motorbike accidents with pedestrians coming in second; we need to raise awareness about this and reduce this.”

Pakakumi used the exercise to issue the riders with helmets and reflectors with Mama Mboga at Huruma open air market also benefiting from aprons from the firm. Lucky riders on the day also got away with fuel vouchers .

“We did the first exercise in Nairobi and we will go across the country. We insist on road safety because it is a collective responsibility. We have to put a combined effort to have this campaign a success,” Pakakumi’s Humphrey Njiru.

Huruma Boda Boda Association chairman George Ndiva insisted on the use of road safety apparels to enhance safety

He said, “We urge all stakeholders to work hand in hand to ensure that all road safety measures are followed. Drivers and riders must make sure that they all adhere the set out rules.”

“For Boda Boda guys, it is not okay to hit and run it is something that we need to end from now henceforth,” Ndiva added.
