His performance confirmed that given a chance, Kenyans are as good as they come.

Kenyan driver Hamza Anwar finished in a credible fourth position in the Junior WRC category as Croatia Rally ended on Sunday afternoon.

Navigated by Galwegian Martin Brandy in a Ford Fiesta Rally 3, Anwar clocked a cumulative total of 4:16:10.8 behind winner Eamonn Kelly, Tom Rensonnet and Roberto Blach.

The category’s favorite William Creighton, had a roll on Saturday while his compatriot Laurent Pellier retired on engine failure on the penultimate stage.

Tensonnet moved in to occupy the top spot but encountered engine issues of his own with just one stage left to run, which made Kelly take the lead.

In overall championship standing, Anwar is currently placed eighth with four rounds to the end of the 2023 calendar.

Anwar made his WRC debut on Safari Rally Kenya in 2021, steering his Fiesta Rally3 through one of the WRC’s most demanding rallies to second in the Rally3 category.

The youngster now has 31 rally starts, and Croatia Rally was his third experience in European rallying.

Meanwhile, Elly Evan won the overall title at WRC Croatia Rally to take his first win since Rally Finland 2021.

The Toyota Gazoo Racing driver was followed closely by M-Sport Ford rival Ott Tänak with Esapekka Lappi completing the podium in a Hyundai i20 N.

“It feels so insignificant now, that’s the bottom line,” Elly said. “We’ve been working on this for a long time but it’s surprising how little it means just at the moment.

"Back to missing our friend after the real focus of the weekend. Straightaway when you come across the finish line that’s all you can think about," headded.

“We promised the [Breen] family we’d enjoy the weekend, we’ve done that. I’m sure they were following us, but we’re definitely thinking of you.”
