Rape cases in the county have been on the rise, leading to high numbers of teenage pregnancies.
Education stakeholders and parents in Homa Bay county want Taekwondo to be taken seriously in schools with a quest to protect young girls from sexual violence.
The stakeholders have partnered with the Taekwondo Federation in order to enhance the ladies’ self-defense and discipline levels. The rape cases in the county have been increasing immensely over time and has led to a rapid rise of teenage pregnancies.
Evidence from the National Crimes Research Centre NCRC (2020) says that Homa Bay is among the counties struggling to contain defilement, teenage pregnancies, rape, physical violence, and domestic violence.
Speaking on Citizen TV, a parent noted that with Taekwondo skills, the children will learn how to fight and defend themselves in case of a rape attempt. “It helps the girl child in a case of kidnap or any other misfortune,” she said.
Meanwhile, Taekwondo Federation vice chairman Philip Khayemba noted that the move will enable the federation to source for talent who will represent the country in international events.
He added that as they aim to protect themselves, they will also be able to nurture their talents.
“I would also like to seek support from the County Government to support us so we can help these young ones,” he said.
