Patrick Sangwa shared his disappointment after Burundi’s homecoming clash ended in defeat, as he turned his focus to their next challenge against Gabon.
Burundi national football team head coach Patrick Sangwa has voiced his disappointment over his team’s display in their 1-0 defeat to Harambee Stars during Thursday evening’s World Cup qualifier at the Intwari Stadium.
Playing in front of their home fans for the first time in over a year, following CAF’s suspension of their stadiums, Patrick Sangwa had hoped the Swallows would deliver a dominant performance to mark their return.
However, those hopes were dashed as Harambee Stars took control early, with substitute Ryan Ogam netting the decisive goal in the second half. The two sides had shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

‘Not a Game to Enjoy’ - Michael Olunga Backs Benni McCarthy’s Stance on Burundi’s Dirty Tricks

Burundi vs Kenya: Patrick Sangwa Frustrated with the Swallows After Loss to Harambee Stars
The match got off to a dramatic start, with Burundi’s hopes dealt a major blow just minutes after kickoff when forward Caleb Bimenyimana was shown a straight red card for a reckless high boot that struck Kenya goalkeeper Brian Bwire.
Patrick Sangwa admitted that despite being reduced to 10 men, he still expected his players to secure a win over Harambee Stars, given their preparation and the quality within the squad.
Following their defeat, Harambee Stars have climbed to third in Group F, having accumulated 12 points. Burundi were pushed to fourth with 10 points.

Harambee Stars boss Benni McCarthy believes Burundi got away with so much following their highly physical approach on his players during their World Cup qualifier.
“I just want to tell my players that even though we had one player who was red-carded, according to me, the players have given their all. However, I wouldn’t say they played very well because Burundians are always great at defending and attacking,” Patrick Sangwa said in a post-match press conference.
“We wanted to win, but sadly failed to achieve that goal. I wouldn’t say that I’m happy with the game because it didn't go as we wanted it to. It was our first game at home, and we wanted to walk away with the victory, but we failed.”
Burundi will now shift focus to their upcoming clash against Gabon on October 14, where they hope to secure a victory and improve their FIFA ranking. On the same day, Harambee Stars will face Ivory Coast.
