Will Greenwood play against Super Eagles in Unity Cup?

Faruq Ibrahim 19:02 - 22.04.2025

The Super Eagles could potentially face Mason Greenwood in the Unity Cup next month.

The Super Eagles will play Ghana and one of Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago this May for the Unity Cup. The competition, set in London, will host some of the best African and Caribbean stars in football and is touted as an avenue to foster unity and promote culture.

Will Greenwood play?

Although the 23-year-old striker has an England cap, he is eligible for a change in nationality according to FIFA regulations, as the appearance came before he turned 21, and he has not played more than thrice for the Three Lions.

The Marseille star has begun the process to switch his nationality to the Reggae Boys, as he does not see a future in the England national team.

In October 2022, he was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behavior. While the charges were dropped, the circumstances forced him out of Manchester United and changed his career trajectory. When England interim boss Lee Mason was asked if Greenwood would score a call-up again, he said they were not even considering it.

The update

Greenwood is currently excelling at Marseille, after he shone during a loan stint in Getafe last year. He has 18 goals in Ligue 1 this season; only Ousmane Dembele has more.

The Jamaican FA confirmed that Greenwood has applied for a change of allegiance. The team manager, Roy Simpson, said that the process was yet to be completed but confirmed they are working hard at it.

“Nothing has changed,’ he said, per the Gleaner. “It’s still being worked on. The family has asked us not to speak on it. But nothing has changed.”

It remains to be seen whether Greenwood’s papers would be ready before the Unity Cup, however, his availability would certainly boost Jamaica’s chances of winning.
