"We haven't established that connection yet. It was the same with Darwin, Lucho, Diogo, or the other lads who used to play up front. I knew when to make a run with Diogo or Darwin; I knew where to find them because I understood their game so well," Mohamed Salah said.

"It's not like that with him yet because he's still new. Sometimes I need the ball to my feet, other times I need the space. We're trying to fix this in training and with the video analysis the manager shows us. I'll figure it out soon, because it will help my own game develop as well."

Hugo Ekitike is a French professional footballer who plays as a forward. He began his youth career at Cormontreuil FC before joining the academy at Stade de Reims in 2013. He signed his first professional contract with Reims in July 2020.

After a loan spell at Danish club Vejle Boldklub, Hugo Ekitike returned to Reims for the 2021-2022 season, where he scored 10 goals in 24 Ligue 1 matches.

His impressive form led to a loan move to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in July 2022, which was made permanent a year later for a reported fee.

After a mixed spell at PSG, he moved to Eintracht Frankfurt, initially on loan, and then permanently. At Frankfurt, Ekitike flourished, scoring 26 goals in 64 appearances and being named in the 2024-2025 Bundesliga Team of the Season.

In July 2025, Liverpool announced they had reached an agreement to sign Ekitike from Frankfurt. The transfer was for a reported £79 million total fee, consisting of a £69 million fixed fee and £10 million in add-ons.

He has since completed a medical and agreed to a long-term contract with the club. Ekitike's signing was a significant move for Liverpool, who had reportedly been told that their previous target, Alexander Isak, was not for sale.

Liverpool has significantly overhauled its attack, bringing in Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz alongside Ekitike. Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz were sold, while Diogo Jota tragically died in a horrific car accident. Consequently, achieving synergy in the attack will require some time.
