The Kenyan international played the entire game but could not stop the home side from recording maximum points at the Red Bull Arena
Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama lost his second match in three days when FC Montreal were beaten 2-1 away to New York Red Bulls on Sunday morning.
Wanyama, who captains Montreal, was involved from the off yet again, playing 90 minutes in central midfield alongside Canadian Mathieu Choiniere as coach Hernan Losada went with a 3-4-3 system at the Redbull Arena.
Anres Reyes opened the scoring after 21 minutes off a corner, kicking the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead in favour of Red Bulls, but Montreal fought back and levelled the game eight minutes later.
Bryce Duke’s free-kick managed got to George Campbell who headed it to Joel Waterman and the defender beat Carlos Coronel in Red Bulls’ goal to make it 1-1.
In the 38th minute, the Red Bulls regained their lead as Cory Burke was able to beat Montreal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois but on the initial play, the goal was reversed after the player was adjudged to have been offside.
However, VAR decided to have another look and upon a lengthy review, referee Drew Fischer was asked to have a look at the monitor, who – after a quick check – awarded the goal.
It is back-to-back defeats for Montreal who had been thrashed 3-0 by Cincinnati on Thursday, having headed into the game on the back of six straight wins in all competitions.
Red Bulls also exacted revenge on Montreal following their 2-0 away loss to the Canadian side on April 23, seeing their rivals slip down to 13th on the 15-team table, having risen to seventh following their good run prior to Thursday’s loss.
Montreal have another busy week ahead with the Canadian Championship semi-final clash at home to Forge FC on Wednesday before hosting Inter Miami on Saturday.
