Talanta needed an Emmanuel Osoro goal to stun Gor Mahia 1-0 on Thursday.

FC Talanta assistant coach Jackson Gatheru has credited his players’ tactical discipline and unwavering self-belief for their surprise 1-0 victory over Gor Mahia in a tightly contested FKF Premier League fixture at Dandora Stadium.

Facing a wounded Gor side battling both internal unrest and pressure in the title race, Talanta delivered a resolute performance.

Emmanuel Osoro's 13th goal of the season — a smartly taken half-turn and shot in the 38th minute — proved enough to hand the 2021 National Super League champions their second-ever win against K’Ogalo in eight attempts.

Speaking to Azam TV after the match, Gatheru was full of praise for his players’ execution of the game plan.

“My players have shown they can do it. They worked hard and I am grateful that we faced a Gor Mahia side that were strong, but it was just our day,” he said.

The assistant coach highlighted how crucial discipline was to their strategy, noting that previous self-doubt had been holding the team back.

“They played according to instructions today. Before, we were not believing in ourselves enough. If God helped us overcome this match, I believe in the next clashes, we will do well, and I am super grateful to God for that.”

Talanta’s defensive structure stifled Gor Mahia’s attacking rhythm, frustrating the record champions throughout the second half.

The team managed to slow the tempo and expertly run down the clock to secure all three points, boosting their chances of survival in the top flight.

The result lifted Talanta to 29 points from 28 games, sitting 14th on the FKF Premier League table. With just seven matches left in the season, the win could prove pivotal in their bid to avoid relegation for a third consecutive season.

Meanwhile, Gor Mahia’s troubles continue to mount. Already rocked by reports of a rift within the technical bench — including head coach Sinisa Mihic’s ongoing feud with his assistants Michael Nam and Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno — the loss dealt a blow to their pursuit of back-to-back league titles.

A win would have brought them within a point of league leaders Tusker, who now sit on 51 points, just two ahead of surging Kenya Police.

Off the pitch, Gor Mahia is juggling grand ambitions with fresh controversies. The club’s recently revealed plans to build a 60,000-seater stadium in Lukenya, Machakos County — complete with a four-star hotel, gym, and training facilities — has been met with mixed reactions.

While Deputy Patron Eliud Owalo leads the push to elevate the club’s infrastructure, some fans argue that regions like Kisumu or Siaya, which are closer to Gor’s traditional fanbase, would have been more fitting choices for the landmark project.
