South Africa Football Association president Danny Jordaan has hailed Nigeria’s quality while tipping them to win their World Cup playoffs amid ongoing debate back home.

South Africa Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan seems not to agree with the sentiments of the country’s Sports Minister over the fate of Nigeria in the World Cup playoffs.

The South Africa Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said in October that he wishes Nigeria are knocked out of the World Cup playoffs, despite the Super Eagles helping Bafana Bafana qualify for the 2026 World Cup, as he blamed the West Africans for instigating a three-point deduction imposed on Hugo Broos’ team by FIFA for fielding an ineligible player.

That elicited mixed reactions but most fans in South Africa agreed with him, showing the love-hate relationship that exists between fans of the two countries, but Jordaan has taken a different route.

While commenting on Nigeria’s World Cup prospects after watching them thrash Gabon 4-1 in the African playoff semi-final on Friday, Jordaan termed the Super Eagles as a country with some of the best players in the world who he hopes will be among the 48 countries at next year’s tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

What Has SAFA Boss Said About Nigeria?

“Nigeria were within our group and it was a very tight group and very stressful in the end so I want to wish Nigeria all the best for their match,” Jordaan told SAFA media ahead of Nigeria’s playoff final with DR Congo in Morocco on Sunday.

“To [Amaju] Pinnick my friend and to the president of the NFF, all the best and deliver the results. Nigeria is a big team, Nigeria have got players amongst the best in the world and I hope that they will play true to their form, their ability and the level that is asked on behalf of all the people of Nigeria.

“As the South Africa Football Association, given our close working relationship with the proximity with the leadership of the NFF, I want to wish them all the best,” Jordaan added.

Nigeria, who will be relying on Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, scorer of two goals against Gabon, will be looking for a win to make it to the intercontinental playoff in March 2026.
