Shericka Jackson remains focused on breaking the 200m world record, but her immediate priority is recovering from injury.

Two-time world 200m champion Shericka Jackson still has eyes on obliterating the late Florence Griffith-Joyner’s 200m world record.

Flo-Jo set the world record of 21.34 seconds in the 200m at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, and Shericka Jackson has not shied away from stating that she wants to break it.

She is currently the fastest woman alive in the 200m, having clocked a stunning 21.41 seconds at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

The two-time world 100m silver medallist strongly believes she has a chance to break the 200m world record.

Shericka Jackson revealed that the 2023 season showed her how much potential she had, and despite the injury in 2024, she is back in the grind like never before.

Shericka Jackson maintained that the record is not her main priority, but when she is healthy and ready to go for it, then something massive will happen.

“I think in 2023, I had a very good shot and I was brave enough to see it because at one point, I really wanted to break the world record,” Shericka Jackson said in a press conference ahead of the Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen.

“It is something that I still have in mind, but I don’t have my full focus on it. I take each step at a time and I feel like if it’s supposed to come, it will come once I’m healthy. It is still something I want and once I’m healthy and having fun, then something might happen.”

Now, she competes in her first 200m of the season since her exit from the Gyulai István Memorial, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting.

Shericka Jackson picked up an injury during the race and finished eighth, ending her 2024 season. At the Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen, Shericka Jackson just wants to cross the finish line healthy and see how things go.

She pointed out that her main focus will be on the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, where she intends to defend her 200m title and hopefully go one place better in the 100m.

“I needed to take a break, and I think last was really hurtful, both mentally and physically. But I had coaches, my family and friends around,” she revealed.

“Coach and I sat down and we had a conversation during the Olympics, and I think going home was the best thing at that moment and we worked on the fine details to get healthy and I’m excited.

“I just want to cross the finish line healthy, I haven’t competed seriously in the 200m since June last year. I just want to take it easy on myself and not rush into anything.”

While Shericka Jackson remains determined to break the 200m world record in the future, her immediate focus is on regaining full health and competing at her best.
