Fan clashes erupted at Gusii Stadium ahead of the Shabana vs Gor Mahia match, leaving several injured and match plans uncertain.

Several fans have been reported injured following violent clashes at Gusii Stadium ahead of the highly anticipated FKF Premier League match between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia.

The match, scheduled for Sunday at 2:00 pm, was thrown into uncertainty after chaos erupted in the stands despite earlier security preparations.

The stadium, which has a capacity of 10,000, was filled to the brim by 11:30 am, hours before kickoff.

Tensions began to rise as rival supporters engaged in confrontations, with pockets of violence breaking out in several sections of the stadium.

Stadium announcers made repeated appeals for calm before urgently requesting ambulances to transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.

Authorities had laid out elaborate security plans throughout the week to manage the large crowds, aware of the growing fan base of Shabana FC and the historical dominance of Gor Mahia supporters.

Despite these efforts, the arrangements were overwhelmed as altercations spread through the stands.

Concerns had already been raised over whether Gusii Stadium could host a game of such significance, given the volatile nature of high-stakes football rivalries in Kenya.

This was reminiscent of the Mashemeji Derby between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, which was postponed twice in recent months due to stadium inadequacies. That match was eventually hosted at a fully packed Nyayo Stadium.

Fan seating arrangements had been clearly outlined in advance: Shabana FC supporters were allocated the G1 to G9 regular stands, while Gor Mahia fans occupied G10 to G13. GSU officers were stationed strategically between G9 and G10 to serve as a buffer zone.

In the VIP section, Shabana fans were placed in the Green Stripe stand, with Gor Mahia fans taking up the Double Red stand.

The VVIP Pavilion was designated to be shared equally between fans of both teams.

Despite these clear allocations, tensions flared up, with security personnel struggling to contain the unrest.

Several fans sustained injuries during stampedes and physical confrontations. Eyewitnesses reported seeing families with children caught in the melee, raising serious concerns about safety and crowd control.

FKF officials and match organizers are in a closed-door meeting to assess whether the match can go ahead or be postponed.

Fans and stakeholders alike await word on the fate of the fixture, with many calling for better planning and crowd control for high-profile games in the future.

Will the game proceed, or will safety concerns force a late cancellation? Kenyan football fans can only watch and wait.
