McTominay scores two goals against Cyprus and Spain

The 26-year-old scored twice on Saturday when Scotland overcame Cyprus 3-0. Before that, he had only scored once in 34 games for his country.

“As a kid, I was an attacking midfield player and then I stretched a little bit, got a bit too big for that,” the Manchester United man said after the match.

“Then I was more of a sitting midfield player but I like to do both, I like to get in the box and help my team-mates defend as well.

“I’ve got to keep doing that, I know I can add more goals and assists to my game and I think the last two games have been an example of that.”

McTominay praises Scotland team performance

The Scottish team were denied possession of the ball by Spain but still had the same amount of shots on goal and McTominay has praised his teammates for making their effort count.

Speaking in an interview, McTominay said, “We did really well, we knew they’d have a lot of the ball and the manager (Steve Clarke) said we had to be clinical when we had the opportunity. We had more than enough opportunities to hurt them tonight and score some goals.”

“Before we went out onto the bus into the stadium, he (Clarke) was saying, ‘This is a chance to create your own legacy as a Scotland player’,” McTominay continued.

“And these are the nights in 20, 30 years that people remember, and watch about the game and say, ‘I was there or I had little children who came and watched the game’, and that’s what the game is about.

“That’s what all these people are about. They’re so amazing every time we come to Hampden and we can’t thank them enough.”

Scotland are top of the group A table with six points and are hoping they can reach maximum points and qualify for the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.
