While Rio Ferdinand maintains that Manchester United are still the world's biggest club, he cautiously acknowledges that things could eventually change.

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has sparked a debate with bold claims on why the ‘Red Devils’ are still greater than Liverpool.

Liverpool were crowned the Premier League champions and have now equalled Manchester United's record of being English champions 20 times.

This came after they beat Tottenham 5-1 on Sunday evening, equaling Manchester United’s record, but Rio Ferdinand believes his former team is still the best.

Manchester United have struggled this season, finishing in the bottom half of the table with only 39 points. Ferdinand argued that they might be successful, but are not the biggest club, noting that United are.

“It's a fact. You go anywhere in the world, there are more Man United fans than there are Liverpool fans. But that will change if they remain successful and Man United don't,” he revealed on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel.

“There will be a swing of new fans who adopt successful teams. If Liverpool becomes that over the next 10 years, then they have a chance to balance that up, in terms of the biggest club in the world right now. But right now, it's a landslide win for Man United in terms of being the biggest in the world.”

The former West Ham United centre back further pointed out that during his time at Manchester United, they also had greater success than just having a huge fanbase.

Ferdinand revealed that watching Liverpool take up that space has been frustrating since there is nothing he can do, having retired back in 2015.

“It fries my head. I've got to be honest, when I was at Man United, we were miles ahead, won leagues, etcetera. We clawed it back and then were ahead,” Rio Ferdinand said.

“I was part of that, and it felt great. And now I'm just sitting and watching it before my eyes, just all sliding away. Liverpool has become more successful in the time since I retired. You've just got to accept it.”

While Rio Ferdinand still holds firm that Manchester United remain the world’s biggest club, he admits with concern that Liverpool’s growing success could eventually tip the balance if United fail to reclaim their former glory.

Manchester United boasts an equal number of domestic league titles, but Liverpool's success in Europe, having won six European Cups to Man United's three, makes the Reds superior.
