9. Carles Puyol

Spain and Barcelona legend Carles Puyol is one of the best to have ever played the game in central defence.

Despite his small size, Puyol was known for his commanding presence in the air and had an unmatched ability to read the game.

8. Giorgio Chiellini

Giorgio Chiellini

Nicknamed the Italian Warrior, Giorgio Chiellini was known for his toughness and determination during the course of his successful career, especially for Italy and Juventus, playing alongside Leonardo Bonucchi.

A consistent, commanding, and dependable left-footed defender, Chiellini’s greatest asset was his positional sense, and an ability to read the game, his versatility allowing him to comfortably play in a back three and four-man defence.

The 2006 World Cup winner was also revered for his ability to cover ground and put pressure on or anticipate opponents in positions higher up on the pitch.

7. Daniel Passarella

Daniel Passarella

Daniel Passarella is remembered for his ferocious tackles when he played for Argentina as well as River Plate and Inter Milan in the 1970s and 80s.

5. Fabio Cannavaro

Fabio Cannavaro

The last centre-back to receive the most coveted Ballon d’Or Award, Italian legend Fabio Cannavaro redefined what defending is, showing great quality on the ground and in the air for one of the world’s smallest players in his position.

Cannavaro’s determination, skill, and fearlessness made him a tough defender to play against and led Italy to the 2006 World Cup before a successful stint at Real Madrid, having shone for Juventus.

4. Sergio Ramos

Sergio Ramos

Few defenders possess Sergio Ramos' combination of skill, aggression, and goal-scoring ability. A modern icon, his knack for clutch moments made him indispensable for Real Madrid and Spain.

1. Franz Beckenbauer

Franz Beckenbauer

Nicknamed ‘Der Kaiser’ for his elegance, authority, and regal presence, Franz Beckenbauer is widely regarded as the greatest defender in football history.

But he was far more than a defensive rock. Beckenbauer revolutionised the game by pioneering the ‘sweeper’ or libero role, bringing grace, intelligence, and creativity to a position traditionally known for brute strength.

He stood tall at the heart of the German defence for years, an imperious figure whose composure and vision dictated the tempo of the game. His style was ahead of its time—effortless yet commanding, artistic yet clinical.

A two-time Ballon d’Or winner, Beckenbauer shattered the mould for what a defender could be, blazing a trail for generations to follow.
