The incident occurred in Germany on Sunday, and the players had to remain there until Monday.

A plane carrying Arsenal women’s team back from a Champions League semi-final first leg against Wolfsburg had one of its engines burst into flames.

The plane caught fire on the runway at the Braunschweig Wolfsburg Airport after a bird flew into the engine shortly before it was to take off.

The incident caused a loud bang, and flames immediately started to come out of the left engine of the Boeing 737 plane.

The pilots were quick to evacuate everyone on board, including the Arsenal women's players, to safety.

"Our aircraft developed a technical issue prior to take-off in Germany on Sunday evening," Arsenal’s statement read, as reported by the Daily Mail.

"As a result, we remained in Wolfsburg overnight on Sunday before flying back to England on Monday afternoon. We would like to thank the staff onboard the aircraft and on the ground at the airport for their assistance."

Meanwhile, Arsenal came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Wolfsburg in the first leg in Germany. Stina Blackstenius equalised in the second half to keep the English club’s hope for a second European trophy alive.
