The national team will not take part in any competitive fixtures until at least March 2024 at the earliest.
FKF president Nick Mwendwa has explained the national football team Harambee Stars’ plan for the next four years in order to make the team competitive ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Kenya, alongside neighbors Tanzania and Uganda have bid to host that tournament slotted for June 2027 which will make them automatically qualify by virtue of being hosts, but there is a need to make the side competitive in order to go as far as possible.
Turkish head coach, Engin Firhat was appointed on a permanent basis following the ban after he had taken charge of the team for four matches in 2021 during the Qatar 2022 World Cup Qualifiers.

“We have a new coach as you can see and we played against Iran (In the last international window),” he said, “ we went to highly ranked Iran and played them in their home turf in a full packed stadium and yet they had to rely on two set-piece goals to beat us,” he added.
Harrambe Stars will not be taking part in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations due to the fact that the qualifiers started when Kenya were still banned by FIFA in 2022.
“We will not be at AFCON 24’ because we were banned which is a bad thing but a blessing in disguise. We have enough time to prepare because we will not take part in any competitive fixtures till March next year.”
Kenya will play in a four-team tournament in Mauritius on the 8th and 9th of June this year against the hosts, Pakistan and Djibouti. The fixture list for that four nations series is already out, with the team set to play Djibouti on 12 June.

FKFPL Nick Mwendwa explains why Kenya bid to host the 2027 AFCON
The FKF president explained why Kenya bid to co-host the 2027 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Kenya.
“The coach wants to construct his team before the 2027 AFCON. If a player is 24 today, he will play in that tournament at 27 if he maintains his level.
“The coach wants intense training sessions and preparations as we prepare for that tournament. You will also see us playing in Europe as we prepare for the 2025 AFCON. You will see our u20 being involved this year in the CECAFA tournament in preparation to sight the players we need for 2027.”
Mwendwa has also revealed plans to seek sponsorship deals for all leagues in the country following “concrete talks” with President William Ruto and Ababu Namwamba.
“We are going to have a record-breaking deal and sponsorships not just for the main league, but also for the lower divisions.

“I believe we will then cross the heights which will grow our players by 2027. After 2027, we will think about the 2030 World Cup. The 2026 World Cup might come too close because we were disrupted, but the one we are really thinking about is the 2030 edition.”
