Etemesi has scored 12 goals in his debut FKFPL season, with 10 of them being braces.

Nairobi City Stars head coach Nicholas Muyoti has praised the progress his young striker Kelvin Etemesi has made since signing from Kangemi All Stars before the start of the season but has insisted he still has room for improvement.

So far, Etemesi has featured in 24 of 33 games this season, clocking 1674 minutes on the pitch. His 12 goals have been scored in the last 13 games.

After 12 unsuccessful attempts in the league, the forward finally found his shooting boots against Mathare United in March when he scored his first brace.

Since then, he has scored four more braces and also scored another two goals to put him on 12 for the season.

“Since Etemesi came into the team, we have seen tremendous growth,” he said. “He has grown into a highly reliable player, “he added.

“If he misses from the first eleven, you can now tell we are missing something and be like, 'how come he is out?'  We signed him as a winger and converted him into a number nine.”

Etemesi came into the side as a wide player but graduated into becoming a center forward, a role Muyoti believes has helped unleash his potential.

“I think he has enjoyed that role. We have worked on him a lot. When we played him wide, his decision-making was poor, and was losing a lot of balls.

“As a nine, he is much more effective, he is holding up the ball well and linking the play. We have gotten his right position. He has also forced us into changing formation from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 just to maximize his strengths given the way he operates."

The former Kakamega Homeboyz head coach however insists that the 21-year-old forward still has plenty of things to improve on.

“When he plays in a partnership, he works well and whoever else comes in, so it is an area we want to work on in order to ensure he finds the right consistency and make sure his indecision reduces.”

“He needs to get even better with his eye for goal and get more goal scoring opportunities to become more effective.

Etemesi will be fancying his chances of adding to his tally of 12 goals for the season when City Stars face Gor Mahia at the Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.
