Mikel Arteta: Why Arsenal Legend Feels Gunners Boss Could Quit Soon

A former Arsenal star feels Mikel Arteta could end up leaving Arsenal at the end of this season if he secures a major trophy to join one of Europe’s top sides.

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has voiced concerns that Mikel Arteta could depart the club on a high note if he secures a major trophy this season, suggesting a return to Spain could be on the cards.

The Gunners are currently enjoying a strong campaign, sitting atop both the Premier League after a 2-0 win over Brentford left them five points clear on Wednesday, and their Champions League group. With an FA Cup run beginning in January and a place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, the club is well-positioned to end its trophy drought, which dates back to the 2020 FA Cup.

Arteta, who has just over 18 months remaining on his contract, has transformed Arsenal into genuine contenders. However, Petit, a key member of the 1997-98 double-winning side, believes a successful season might prompt the Spanish manager to seek a new challenge.

Speaking to Snabbare, Petit identified Barcelona, where Arteta began his career as a youth player, as a potential destination.

Why Does Petit Think Arteta May Quit?

"Mikel Arteta could be tempted to come back to Spain, especially to a club he knew when he was very young," Petit explained as quoted by Dailymail.

"Honestly, with the work he's doing, can you imagine if he wins something at the end of the season? He would probably say, 'Okay, fair enough. For me, after almost seven years, I've done it with Arsenal. I think it's time for me to see something else.' I can understand that."

Petit added that the allure of one of the world's biggest clubs, combined with a return to his home country, would be a powerful draw for Arteta.

"If Barcelona knocks at your door, you will think, 'Okay, listen, Barcelona is one of the greatest clubs in the world. I'll be back in Spain, and the lifestyle is good for my family.'"
