Arsenal missed a golden chance to extend their lead as a fiery London derby ended in frustration for Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has reacted to a disappointing stalemate at Stamford Bridge where his side failed to fully capitalize on a numerical advantage against a resilient Chelsea.

The Gunners missed the chance to open up a significant seven-point lead at the Premier League summit, settling for a 1-1 draw in a contest defined by aggression, a controversial red card, and significant injury news for the visitors.

The build-up to the high-stakes encounter was marred by a significant blow for the league leaders, with defensive lynchpin William Saliba ruled out due to a training injury sustained on Saturday.

Gabriel Magalhães was also absent thus Arteta was forced to deploy a makeshift central defensive pairing of Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié to handle a Chelsea side that has surprisingly emerged as genuine title contenders in recent weeks.

Despite the defensive reshuffles, the match's pivot point arrived in the 38th minute.2 Chelsea midfielder Moisés Caicedo was dismissed for an X-rated challenge on Mikel Merino, a tackle that left spectators wincing. Referee Anthony Taylor, initially hesitant, was advised by VAR to review the incident, leading to Chelsea’s sixth red card of the season.

"A really tough one. Two teams that play with a lot of intensity and aggression, you could sense it in every tackle. The game settled and after the red card, we needed to settle and make the judgement but we conceded a foul and a goal. Two top teams fighting for the Premier League so it's normal,” Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told Sky Sports as quoted by BBC.

Despite being reduced to ten men, it was the hosts who drew first blood immediately after the interval. Trevoh Chalobah rose above Declan Rice to loop a header home from a Reece James corner, punishing Arsenal’s failure to control the tempo.

It was a moment of shock for the visitors, who found themselves trailing against a fire-breathing Chelsea side led by an immense performance from their captain, James.

The intensity of the London derby was palpable throughout, with yellow cards flashing frequently.

By halftime, three of Arsenal's back four had been booked, complicating their defensive approach. Arteta acknowledged the physical nature of the duel and the specific targeting of his cautioned players during the difficult second half.

Merino Salvages a Point

Arsenal finally found their response through Merino, the victim of the earlier horror tackle. Bukayo Saka, ever the catalyst, checked inside past Marc Cucurella and whipped in a precise delivery.

Merino rose imperiously at the far post to nod home the equalizer, a reward for his tenacity in a game that tested his physical limits.

"We had four players with yellow cards and you could see they were targeting those players. The first action in the section half, we conceded and we had to get through that. We scored a brilliant goal. We had two or three big chances,” he added.

"They are a really good team. They've scored seven goals from corners, we've scored eight."

Late Drama and Missed Chances

The final stages saw Arsenal push for a winner that would have cemented their title charge. Arteta introduced attacking reinforcements in Viktor Gyökeres, Noni Madueke, and Martin Ødegaard to break the deadlock. The visitors came to dominate territorially, creating chances to make it 2-1.

Merino almost turned match-winner with a low drive, but Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez produced a vital save, also blocking bravely from Gyökeres on the rebound.

Ultimately, the Gunners had to settle for a point but remained top despite the failure to exploit Caicedo’s dismissal leaving the title race tighter than they would have liked.
