Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga scored twice in a space of eight minutes to rescue a late victory for Al Duhail from the jaws of defeat in a Qatar Stars League encounter

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga’s late brace secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory for Al Duhail against Al Rayyan in the Qatar Stars League on Thursday night.

Defending champions Al Duhail came from two goals down to defeat Al Rayyan in match week eight of the 2023-2024 season at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha.

Olunga scored the winner of the high-intensity match in the 88th minute after he had earlier restored parity for his team in the 80th minute.

Al Duhail’s first goal was scored by Almoez Ali in the 59th minute off a penalty after Roger Guedes had given Al Rayyan a two-goal lead in the 15th and 41st minutes.

“Against all odds. Keep going and believe,” Olunga posted on social media after his two goals that see Al Duhail now on 16 points, three behind leaders Al Sadd.

Olunga stared by finishing off a series of fine moves that started from the midfield by Al Duhail with a right-footed shot from very close range to the bottom right corner off an assist by Sultan Al Brake.

Not relenting, Al Duhail kept attacking in droves as they put Al Rayyan on the backfoot. They came close to taking the lead in the 84th minute, with Ibrahima Bamba’s header from the centre of the box slightly missing to the left.

Four minutes later, Olunga got his eighth goal of the season as he gave Al Duhail the winner with a left-footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner following a fast break.

The Kenya international has now scored three goals in as many matches for Al Duhail after getting on target when they lost 3-2 to a Cristiano Ronaldo-led Al-Nassr in the Asian Champions League last month.

His brace puts him third in the Golden Boot chase with eight goals, one behind Akram Afif of Al Sadd, and three adrift of Algerian forward Yacine Brahimi who plays for Al Gharafa.

It does not get any better for Olunga and co as they take on Al-Nassr in the return leg in Doha on Tuesday in what will be a must-win tie if they have to avoid an early elimination from the Champions League.
