Former Sofapaka midfielder scored the only goal for Mara against MCF

Mara Sugar FC edged out Mully Children's Family (MCF) FC 1-0 as Migori Youth thumped Naivas FC 3-0 in National Super League (NSL) matches played on Saturday.

Victory took the Sugar Millers to fourth spot on the league standings, while MCF remained eighth on the table.

Mara Sugar made their intentions clear when Mathias Isogol's well-taken shot narrowly missed the target just a minute into the game.

The Sugar Millers' early pressure paid off 18th minutes later when Brian Ochieng scored with his left foot to make it 1-0 to Mara Sugar, with Davin Owino grabbing an assist.

The former Sofapaka attacking midfielder tried to double Mara's lead in the 27th minute, but this time MCF goalkeeper Godfrey Were pulled off a decent save.

Five minutes later, MCF launched a rare attack with Ian Mutanda finding Tony Nyagor, who fired over the Mara goalpost.

Brian Ochieng, who was looking lively for Mara, set up Victor Ngume in the 43rd minute, and the striker forced Were into a great save as the Sugar Millers continued to dominate.

Nevertheless, MCF were able to contain the Sugar Millers until the match referee blew the halftime whistle, and Mara were leading 1-0 at the interval.

John Ochieng was denied an equalizer for MCF straight after the restart when his stinging header clipped the crossbar.

Arnold Akafwale then attempted a shot at goal just before the hour mark, which sailed over the angular of the goal frame, while MCF coach David Mahira made two substitutions in an attempt to reinforce the attack.

MCF eventually created a chance of their own with a quarter of an hour remaining, but it was Robert Ng'ambi who failed to connect to a cross at the back post despite throwing his whole body in the direction.

However, Mara Sugar looked dangerous on the counterattack in the closing stages of the game and Mohamed Baraza's goal-bound effort was deflected wide of the target.

Ultimately, Brian Ochieng's first-half strike was enough for Mara Sugar to record a 1-0 victory over MCF away in Machakos.

Meanwhile, Migori Youth edged out Naivas FC 3-0 in an encounter that was played at Migori Stadium.

The hosts got off to a perfect start, and they went ahead in the third minute before adding the second goal in the 35th minute of the match.

The momentum was with Migori in the second stanza, and they put the game to bed in the 89th minute for a win that helped them reduce the gap between them and second-placed Murang’a Seal to just one point.
