Kenya will face defending champions Somalia in the CECAFA U-17 AFCON qualifiers, aiming to secure a continental berth.

Kenya have been drawn in a challenging Group B alongside defending champions Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan for the upcoming CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) – CECAFA qualifiers.

The highly anticipated tournament will take place from December 14-27, 2024, in Uganda at the Hamz Stadium in Nakivubo and St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

The draw, conducted by CECAFA Women’s Football Development Manager, Jean Namayega Sseninde promises a competitive showdown in Uganda.

Somalia, the 2022 champions, will be a tough opponent with Kenya eager to prove their mettle against regional powerhouses.

“We expect a very competitive tournament with the youngsters expressing themselves as much as possible,” said Sseninde during the draw.

The former Uganda international expressed confidence in the tournament’s ability to showcase rising talent and foster the development of youth football across the region.

Kenya will look to advance past the group stage and secure one of the two coveted spots to represent the CECAFA Zone in the CAF U-17 AFCON 2025.

The team’s preparation will include strict compliance with tournament regulations, as CECAFA Competitions Director Yusuf Mossi emphasized the importance of fairness and transparency.

“All teams will have their players undergo the mandatory Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) tests to determine if they are eligible to play in the tournament,” noted Mossi.

This measure ensures that all players meet the age requirements for the U-17 category, a critical aspect of fostering fair competition.

In the last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) U-17 CECAFA qualifiers held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2022, Somalia beat South Sudan 3-1 in the final.
