Will new AFC Leopards goalkeeper James Ssetuba dislodge Lewis Opiyo as first choice?

AFC Leopards confirmed the signing of Ugandan goalkeeper James Ssetuba on Monday.

The 28-year-old moved to the Den on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract with Kakamega Homeboys.

He joins the ranks that already boasts of undisputed first-choice stopper Lewis Opiyo but Ingwe recognises the need to build a squad that can compete at the highest level and boasts of depth.

James Ssetuba's impressive performances this season, including six clean sheets, garnered attention from multiple clubs across East Africa.

James Ssetuba’s Career Path to AFC Leopards

Born in Entebbe, Uganda, Ssetuba’s football career has been marked by stints with several clubs in the region.

He began his career with Entebbe Young Academy. He then developed his skills at Proline Academy, playing for both their junior and senior teams.

His career has included stints at several clubs including URA, Solito Black Stars, Wakiso Giants, and the now-defunct Sony Sugar FC.

He also gained international experience playing for Biashara United in the CAF Confederation Cup and FC Ihefu in Tanzania, before joining Kakamega Homeboyz in 2023.

Ssetuba’s consistent form did not go unnoticed. Reports indicate that top Kenyan clubs, including Gor Mahia and Bandari, as well as Tanzania’s Azam FC and Uganda’s Gaddafi FC and Express FC, expressed interest in acquiring his talents.

Ssetuba’s could be in line to make his debut in Ingwe colours as soon as Wednesday when AFC Leopards settle scores with Sofapaka at the Dandora Stadium. AFC Leopards are currently fourth on the 18-team league after garnering 32 points
