The three-time Champions League winning manager has observed a weakness about Marcus Rashford game that could limit Onana's ball playing capabilities.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed a big limitation Marcus Rashford has that may limit the effectiveness of their new goalkeeper Andre Onana’s ball playing capabilities.

United completed the signing of Onana from 2023 Champions League finalists Inter Milan for a reported fee of 47.2 million pounds, and he is expected to elevate United’s ability to build up play from the back, something David De Gea was often criticized for.

While at Inter, Onana contributed effectively to their attack, as his ability to spread passes both from short range and long range situations allowed Inter’s forwards to get into the game.

Inter often used a two man strike-partnership upfront, with head coach Simeone Inzaghi often alternating Edin Dzeko, Lauraro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku.

The three strikers are all experts at playing with their back to goal and holding the ball up, allowing willing runners like Denzel Dumfries and Nicolo Barella to run in behind and get into goalscoring situations.

These skill sets helped make things easy for Onana, who would easily evade the opposition pressure and play it long to them. It gave Manchester City problems first hand in the Champions League  final.

However, the Spanish coach believes that Onana’s crisp ability to play it long when under pressure  can be tamed thanks to a big limitation by Marcus Rashford, who has been played as a center forward by Ten Hag on numerous occasions

“With Onana, It is difficult when you (are facing) a keeper like that. You cannot press him (because he is so good with the keeper),” Guardiola said in an interview with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.

“If you go man-to-man with the keeper, they (Inter) can just link behind you to Lukaku, Lautaro and Dzeko who are good at keeping the ball.”

Guardiola has pointed out Rashford’s inability to “keep the ball” and just run in behind at pace as something that could make Onana’s long passing range to be tamed, which could make United lose possession and look more vulnerable at playing out from the back.

“With United for example, with Rashford and the others, they cannot keep it. They just run in behind!”

United will be hoping to tame this problem if they complete the signing of Danish striker Rasmus Hojuland, having agreed terms with Atalanta.
