Gor Mahia: The Making of K'Ogalo's Nightmare Trophyless Campaign

Stephen Awino 09:27 - 01.07.2025

Gor Mahia's 2024/25 campaign ended in heartbreak and a shock FKF Cup final defeat that left the record champions without a single trophy.

For a club that prides itself on being the most successful in Kenyan football history, Gor Mahia's 2024/25 season will go down as one of the most painful in recent memory.

With expectations sky-high following a dominant league title in the previous campaign, the Green Army was tipped to sweep domestic honours.

Instead, they ended the season empty-handed, a rare occurrence for a side whose name is synonymous with silverware.

So, how did it all go so wrong for K’Ogalo?

A Lukewarm League Title Defence

Gor Mahia’s bid to defend their FKF Premier League title began with a sense of optimism.

The core of the championship-winning squad remained intact, bolstered by a few new additions.

But it did not take long for cracks to show. A string of draws and losse against lower-table teams disrupted their rhythm, and their away form turned from consistent to concerning under former Brazilian head coach Leonardo Neiva, Zedekiah Otieno and former coach Sinisa Mihic.

Despite flashes of brilliance, Gor Mahia found themselves playing catch-up for much of the campaign, often losing ground to high-flying Kenya Pollice.

The absence of a consistent goalscorer haunted them all season long, while injuries to key players like Austin Odhiambo robbed the team of its midfield spine.

If fans were willing to forgive a botched title defence, they had pinned their hopes on the FKF Cup.

But even that, too, turned into heartbreak. Facing recently-promoted Nairobi United in the final, a side yet to even play top-flight football, Gor Mahia were expected to stroll to victory.

Instead, what followed was a stunning upset as Nairobi United held their nerve, playing with freedom and purpose, eventually claiming a 2-1 win.

The defeat was not just a loss on the pitch but a psychological blow off it. The club’s aura of invincibility had cracked.

Part of Gor Mahia's woes stemmed from instability in the dugout.

Compounding the on-pitch problems were backroom staff wrangles and murmurs of player unrest, all distractions that derailed the campaign’s focus.

While the trophyless season is undoubtedly a bitter pill, it may also serve as a much-needed wake-up call.

For too long, Gor Mahia have relied on reputation rather than renewal.

Rebuilding will require more than signing marquee players, it demands a culture shift, investment in infrastructure, and transparent club management.

As the dust settles, Gor Mahia must confront some hard truths.

A nightmare season may just be the catalyst needed for long-overdue reform for K'Ogalo to reclaim its place at the pinnacle.
