Gor Mahia snub Patrick Aussems, reveal coaching credentials next tactician must have

Gor Mahia have revealed the qualities their next coach must have with ex-AFC Leopards tactician Patrick Aussems out of the running for the K’Ogalo hot seat despite recent links.

Former AFC Leopards coach Patrick Aussems will not be joining Gor Mahia after the club clarified that they are not looking to hire a tactician who has previously worked in the country to replace the departed Johnathan McKinstry.

McKinstry ended his two-year stint with K’Ogalo with a second FKF Premier League title in a row after accepting to become the new coach of the Gambia national team and there has been speculation on the possible candidates to replace him.

Former Leopards tactician Aussems was among the names floated around with the Belgian also confirming an approach from K’Ogalo.

However, according to statement released by Gor Mahia, the club will steer clear from any tactician that has previously worked in Kenya, and is instead looking for someone with experience on the continent, who has overseen an African club to the CAF Champions League group stages and beyond.

“We want to clarify that at this time, the club has not been in contact with any coach for the coaching position,” Gor Mahia announced via a statement posted on social media on Wednesday.

“Additionally, the club will be looking to hire a coach who has not previously worked in Kenya and has credentials such as coaching a top club in Africa to the level of CAF Champions League group stage and above or a national team on the continent.”

The announcement signals Gor Mahia’s commitment to ensure they excel in continental football.

K’Ogalo are set to represent Kenya in the CAF Champions League next season and will need a quality squad plus a coach with knowhow to navigate the challenge following previous disappointing outings.

It remains to be seen whom K’Ogalo will settle on ahead of a busy 2024-25 campaign that will see them challenging on multiple fronts.
