Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier has dismissed calls from a section of fans to sack Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor in the wake of his team’s defeat to AFC Leopards.

Amid calls for the sacking of Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor following the Mashemeji Derby loss, the record Kenyan champions have no desire to effect a change.

Gor Mahia were outwitted by bitter rivals AFC Leopards in the 98th Mashemeji Derby at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday with Julius Masaba’s 25th minute goal handing Ingwe all three points.

That was the second defeat in a row for K’Ogalo but the manner in which Akonnor’s team played and what he said after did not go down well with Gor Mahia fans after he admitted his side were “bullied” by a well-drilled Leopards.

Rachier Has Faith in Akonnor

However, Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier says now is not the time to talk about the coach’s future as he feels the Ghanaian has done a decent job so far and deserves to be given time to right the wrongs of the last two weeks.

“Losing a match does not necessarily lead to the sacking of a coach,” said Rachier as quoted by Mozzart Sport.

“As you know, I think we have lost three games, and what position are we in the league? We might be third or fourth with some games to play, and you cannot say that the solution is to sack the coach.”

What is next for Gor Mahia?

Akonnor has overseen 10 games, winning six, drawing one and losing three, which leaves Gor Mahia second on the FKF Premier League table with 19 points, same as Kakamega Homeboyz and Posta Rangers, and one behind leaders Kenya Police.

Shabana and Tusker FC have 18 each while leopards are on 17, although apart from Ingwe and Police, the other teams have played one or two more games than Gor Mahia’s 10.

“We will ask him [Akonnor] to read, learn, and improve. If we were sacking coaches every time they lost, then maybe the Premier League would have only one coach surviving out of the 18, because all of them have lost,” added Rachier.

Gor Mahia have a chance to stop their slide when they play away to Bandari FC on Friday.
