The Kenyan defender bombed up and down the pitch, a quality that was instrumental in getting Middlesbrough a priceless win over Newcastle.

In a captivating Premier League 2 showdown on Friday night, Middlesbrough U21 secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Newcastle, with rising star George Gitau proving instrumental from his right-wing back position.

The 20-year-old defender, touted as a prospect for Kenya's Harambee Stars, showcased his talent with a standout performance for Middlesbrough's youth side.

Gitau has been a key figure in Middlesbrough's youth setup since 2020, consistently making significant contributions on the pitch.

Gitau's promising journey reached a milestone in January when he was named on the bench for Middlesbrough during their FA Cup clash against his former employers Brighton, indicating the recognition of his potential within the club.

Also eligible to play for Germany, Nigeria and England, Gitau’s contribution throughout the match was significant, demonstrating his defensive solidity and attacking prowess from the right flank. His performance underscored his potential as a future talent for both Middlesbrough and Harambee Stars.

The match at Heritage Park unfolded in a pulsating fashion, with both teams displaying attacking intent from the outset.

Newcastle seized an early lead through Ben Parkinson, but Middlesbrough swiftly responded as Ajay Matthews converted Pharrell Willis's delivery to restore parity.

However, Newcastle regained the lead courtesy of a fortuitous deflection off Luke Woolston, leaving Middlesbrough trailing once again.

Despite a barrage of chances for both sides, including efforts striking the woodwork, the first half concluded with Newcastle holding a narrow advantage.

The second half saw fewer opportunities as Newcastle aimed to protect their lead. Nevertheless, Middlesbrough mounted a late resurgence, with captain Jack Hannah heading home from AJ Bridge's free-kick to level the scores.

As the game entered eight minutes of stoppage time, Matthews redeemed himself for a previous miss by firing home a decisive goal for Middlesbrough. The drama continued as Sonny Finch saw his effort denied by the woodwork once more in the dying moments.
