FIFA president Gianni Infantino has disclosed the importance of bringing top-tier talent to MLS for the league's continued growth.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has made a compelling case for Major League Soccer (MLS) to enhance its player recruitment strategy if it aims to elevate its status in the global sports arena.

Speaking at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Los Angeles, Infantino emphasized the need for MLS to adopt a more aggressive approach in signing top-tier talent to compete more robustly on the international stage.

Infantino highlighted the positive impact that signing high-profile players like Lionel Messi has had not only on Inter Miami but also on the broader appeal of the league.

"I told them you have to be a bit more bold, a bit more in the game. Bring in the best players," Infantino remarked as per AFP.

The so-called 'Messi effect' has manifested in significant ways, such as the record-breaking attendance at recent MLS games.

The New England Revolution’s home game against Miami drew an impressive crowd of 65,612 at Gillette Stadium a venue typically reserved for NFL games.

However, MLS faces structural challenges that could hinder the acquisition of such talents including stringent salary caps and squad limitations.

These financial regulations have been the subject of debate, with calls for relaxation from various stakeholders including MLS's broadcast partner, Apple TV.

The FIFA chief also pointed out the long-term benefits of bringing more high-profile players to MLS.

According to Infantino, this strategy would not only boost the league's competitiveness but also inspire young Americans by showing them that soccer can offer a viable path to professional and international success.

"We want to see the best so we need to bring them the best players, but also the best game, and the best spectacle," said Infantino.

"This is what maybe they don't see yet. They see it in basketball, American football, in baseball, and ice hockey. But in soccer, it's still kind of far away. You have to go to Europe. And is there really a great American soccer player?"

The call to action from Infantino is clear: MLS must reconsider its policies and investment strategies to make the league a more attractive destination for the world's best soccer players.

By doing so MLS not only stands to improve its own standing but also contributes to the growth of soccer as a premier sport across North America.
