Police in Ghana have launched investigations into the circumstances leading to the untimely death of a 20-year-old Senegalese player in Kumasi.

Authorities in Ghana's Ashanti Region have launched an investigation into the suspicious death of a 20-year-old Senegalese national, identified as promising goalkeeper Cheith Toure.

The case came to light after an individual named Issah, claiming to be Toure's brother, brought the young footballer's body to the Ebenezer mortuary in Tafo-Kumasi. However, discrepancies in his account have raised serious questions.

Hospital records from Manhyia Government Hospital show that on October 16, 2025, Issah had previously taken Toure to the facility. At the time, he alleged that Toure had been in an accident, but medical staff noted the goalkeeper was brought in already deceased with severe abdominal injuries.

Police Classify Death as ‘Unnatural’

In an official statement, police have classified the death as "unnatural" and are working to uncover the true circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The Inspector General of Police Mr Tetteh Yohuno has deployed a special team made up of homicide investigators, forensic experts and intelligence officers to support the Ashanti Region Police Command with ongoing investigation into the death of a Senegalese national Cheith Toure at Kumasi in the Ashanti Region,” reads the statement signed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police Director, Public Affairs Grace Aansah-Akrof.

“Investigations into the circumstances leading to his death has so far revealed that on the 16th of October, One Isiah, who claimed to be the deceased’s brother took the deceased to the Manhyia Hospital with several abdominal injuries, alleging that the victim had been involved in an accident and later deposited the body at the Ebenezer Mortuary at Tafo, Kumasi after he was pronounced dead on arrival by the hospital authorities.”

Senegalese Government Gets Involved

The Senegalese Ministry of African Integration and Foreign Affairs has expressed grave concerns, suggesting Toure may have been a victim of a "network of scams and extortion." The Senegalese Embassy in Accra, which confirmed the discovery of Toure's body, is now actively involved in the case.

Embassy representatives have travelled to Kumasi to collaborate with local law enforcement on the judicial and administrative procedures required to identify and prosecute those responsible for the footballer's death.

Police have assured the public that they are making every effort to thoroughly investigate the case and bring clarity to the tragic event. Meanwhile, arrangements are being made with Toure's family for the repatriation of his remains once all legal authorisations are complete.
