Former AFC Leopards player Ray Omondi reveals what his highest wage as a player was, and what the average salary for new young players is.
Former AFC Leopards striker Raymond Omondi has given an estimate of how much FKF Premier League players really earn.
Omondi played for a couple of top flight clubs before hanging up his boots to take up coaching in 2020, including the now-defunct Nairobi City Stars, Mathare United, Posta Rangers, Thika United and Sony Sugar, as well as 13-time league champions AFC Leopards.
Salaries among top-flight Kenyan players have always sparked debate among interested followers, but the former goal-getter, who is now the manager of Zetech in Division One, has now revealed how much players really earn.
“Kids are earning around 10,000 shillings in the league if you are coming from home,” Omondi said during a watchalong on Pulse Sports.
“You earn that if you are still living at home, or coming from the rural areas like most Kenyan footballers. Most of them are good players spotted by scouts, but it is generally a good league (to make money financially). You can even earn 100,000 shillings.”
Omondi, who joined Ingwe in 2017 from the United Kingdom, where he was pursuing further studies, has revealed what he precisely earned at the club, but revealed what the highest player used to earn.
“Above 80,000 shillings. Highest player used to earn around 150,000 shillings, and that was Whyvonne Isuza.”
Omondi has given advice to young payers who wish to make it at the highest level.
“If you play in the top flight league of your country, you stand a better chance of going professional because any scout would enquire about the level. You can’t be playing in a lower division today and expect to be playing for PSG tomorrow.”
Meanwhile, Omondi has revealed his biggest regret during his time as an FKF Premier League player.
“We played against Tusker when I was at Thika United. We had dominated the game but went to half time at 3-0 down and were up in arms as to what had happened.
“Jesse Were had scored a five-minute hat-trick. In the 43rd minute,we were three goals down, but we had played our hearts out. We lost 4-0. I had lots of chances to score, but Duncan Ochieng made alot of saves. He kept us at bay.”
