Shabana coach Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo has explained why he has no problem with midfielder Eugene Mukangula gaining more weight since he possesses special qualities for his team

Shabana coach Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo has leapt to the defence of midfielder Eugene Mukangula who has been the subject of discussion among fans due to his size.

Former Leopards captain Mukangula has had to deal with questions around his weigh since he joined Ingwe in 2018 and that has not stopped even after swapping clubs last September.

The midfielder was even reported to be among players Shabana was looking to offload this month but Pamzo has given his seal of approval on Mukangula who he says brings a lot to the team.

“He is here and he is in my plans,” Pamzo told Pulse Sports. “He is one guy I rely on in midfield because of his calmness and when I want to pass the message to the players because of his experience and leadership.”

The former Posta Rangers and Kenya Police coach then wadded into the weigh issue, explaining why the player needs to be cut some slack since he has a lot of qualities that many in Kenya do not possess.

“He is in good shape, mentally and physically,” added Pamzo. “In fact, I would love him to add more weight. Kenyan players are too skinny and that is not always a good thing.”

“Eugene is a technical player, we have very few like him in Kenya. His reading of the game is great and he is also a leader in the dressing room.

“Kenyans profile him because of his size but even at AFC Leopards, he was a very good player.”

On his day, Mukangula is one of the most difficult players to play against with his eye for a good pass and hold-up play creating opportunities and space for those around him to thrive.

His presence near and in the box also causes defenders plenty of problems as they struggle with his physical presence at it is perhaps what his new coach is planning to benefit from.

Mukangula has struggled with weight issues for most of his career and previously admitted how a poor lifestyle saw him dramatically gain weight before he went through the pain of cutting it down.

“It has not been an easy journey but sometimes, you have to go through pain. Sometimes, you look at your career and your health, especially your health, because it is the most important thing,” Mukangula told Pulse Sports last May.

“I had to change a lot of what I was eating so I changed my plate. I also had to incorporate a lot of fasting, intermittent fasting, and that is why I am where I am now. I am happy. I will not stop because it has its health benefits and I will have to keep doing it.”

He now has a coach who totally believes in him and does not mind his size which can only bring good tidings for Shabana, starting with this weekend’s home clash against Ulinzi Stars.
