Beldine Odemba steps down as Junior Starlets coach to focus on leading Kenya's senior women's team, the Harambee Starlets.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has announced the appointment of Mildred Cheche as the new head coach of the Junior Starlets, the country's U17 women’s national team.

This change comes as the team gears up for the high-stakes 2024 FIFA U17 World Cup second-round qualifiers.

Cheche, who has been serving as the assistant coach of the senior women's national team, the Harambee Starlets, and the Rising Starlets, takes over from Beldine Odemba, who will now focus her expertise on leading the Harambee Starlets.

In a recent statement, FKF acknowledged Cheche's extensive experience and her dual role.

"Coach Mildred Cheche, in addition to her new role, currently serves as the assistant coach for the senior women’s national team, the Harambee Starlets, as well as the Rising Starlets," highlighting her deep-rooted involvement in the development of women's football in Kenya.

Cheche's appointment is seen as a strategic move by the federation to harness her expertise and experience at the junior level, especially as the team prepares for significant international fixtures.

Supporting Cheche in her new role is Ann Aluoch, a former Kenya international who has now been named as the assistant coach.

Aluoch, with her rich background in the national team setup, including her stint in 2017 as the coach of the Kenya U-20 national team, brings invaluable experience to the table.

She also holds the position of assistant coach for the U15 women’s national team, ensuring a continuity of coaching philosophy across the different age groups.

Both coaches are CAF B license holders, a testament to their professional qualifications and understanding of the game at a high level.

Their immediate challenge lies in the upcoming 2024 FIFA U17 World Cup second-round qualifiers.

The Junior Starlets are set to face a formidable opponent in DR Congo, with the first leg away on Sunday 4 February and the return leg at home on exactly a week later.
