Olunga came off the bench to score a goal against Persepolis but had to be substituted again during stoppage time.

Qatar Stars League giants Al Duhail have provided an update on the injury status of Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga after he limped off injured despite scoring during the side's final Asian Champions League clash against Persepolis.

Olunga came off the bench to score a goal but had to be substituted again during stoppage time, moments after he had netted his 19th Champions League goal for the reigning Qatari Stars League champions.

The club have confirmed that  Olunga suffered a hamstring injury in his right leg, but is set to undergo a period of rest before commencing on rehabilitation to step up his recovery.

"Medical examinations confirmed that the team’s striker, Michael Olunga, suffered a hamstring injury in his right leg, leading to his recent absence,” the club wrote on its website.

“ He will undergo rest before starting a rehabilitation program to rejoin training sessions.

"Olunga sustained the injury during the team’s recent AFC Champions League match versus Persepolis, where he entered as a substitute in the second half, scoring the winning goal, but was unable to complete the match," the club continued.

Although his injury might not be as serious as previously feared, his absence will mean that Al Duhail will have to depend on someone else for goals.

Mohammed Muntari and Almoez Ali are the players who could likely step up and be counted during Olunga’s absence.
