Harambee Stars defender Zak Vyner shines despite Bristol City promotion setback
Harambee Stars defender Zak Vyner delivered an impressive performance as Bristol City were held to a 1-1 draw by Hull City, featuring fellow Kenyan prospect Eliot Matazo, in a Championship clash on Saturday afternoon.
Vyner played on the left side of a back three, registering an 89% pass accuracy from 108 touches and providing one key line-breaking pass.
He won two of his six ground duels and one of his three aerial duels, showcasing his composure at the back and contributing to Bristol City's pursuit of promotion.
Matazo, who joined Hull City from Monaco in January, has been sidelined for the club's last two matches after suffering an injury on 26th February.
The result leaves Bristol City two points adrift of the Championship top six. Liam Manning's side fell behind after 12 minutes when Joao Pedro displayed brilliant skill to evade Rob Dickie and fire Hull City into the lead.
However, less than a minute later, Pedro received a red card for a reckless challenge on George Tanner, giving the Robins a numerical advantage to chase an equaliser.
Bristol City intensified their pressure but struggled to capitalise on their first-half chances.
Anis Mehmeti eventually equalised from the penalty spot after Sinclair Armstrong was brought down by Alfie Jones. Despite dominating the match and recording 25 shots (10 on target), the Robins were unable to find a winner, and the game ended level.
In League One, Vincent Harper made an appearance off the bench as Exeter City claimed a 2-0 victory over Shrewsbury, securing their first home league win since Boxing Day.
Caleb Watts and Demetri Mitchell scored on either side of half-time, rendering Josh Magennis' penalty miss inconsequential.
Meanwhile, Zech Obiero was left out of the squad as Leyton Orient slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Leighton Orient, marking their fifth consecutive League One loss and further jeopardising their promotion aspirations.
Goals from Tyler Roberts and Cameron McGeehan sealed a deserved away win for Leighton Orient. Roberts opened the scoring on 11 minutes, heading in Terry Taylor's corner from close range.
The lead was doubled just before half-time when Os defender Jack Simpson miscontrolled a pass, allowing McGeehan to easily slot past keeper Josh Keeley for his ninth goal of the season.
