The striker continues to receive criticism for his low goal output.

Manchester United’s Wout Weghorst has hit back at criticism from fans and pundits alike over his performances.

The striker has been a regular starter under Erik ten Hag since his arrival but has managed to score just two goals.

"That’s a lot of matches, and it shows the trust in me. It also shows that I am doing a good job for the team," Weghorst, who can play as a ten said.

"That was the thing I wanted when I came here – to contribute and try and help the club be successful and win trophies.

"We have one now. We have two more to go with the Europa League and FA Cup, and we want to get as high as possible in the table and definitely make the top four for the Champions League.

"So it just shows me that I am being part of it. And being part of us being successful and that appreciation, that’s a good thing.

The Carabao Cup remains the only trophy the Dutchman has won in his career and hopes to bag more with the Red Devils.

"The match against Newcastle at Wembley [in the Carabao Cup final] was a great experience, a lovely atmosphere in the stadium, it has something special," he added.

"We want to win trophies. The one we have now just showed us that we can do it again; we are all hungry for more, all of us."

Ten Hag is expected to push for a signing of a centre-forward and it remains to be seen whether he will make Weghorst’s loan deal - from Burnley via Besiktas – permanent.
