Cheche, as the defender is famously known, is among the players summoned by Kenya’s head coach Engin Firat.
Firat named a provisional squad that will report to camp on March 17 before a friendly game against Iran on March 28 in Tehran.
The friendly with the Middle East country was planned after initial plans to have Burundi as Kenya’s opponents in the upcoming international window were aborted.
"Representing your country is everyone’s dream. I have been fortunate enough to have done it more than 30 times and will once again give my all for our flag," said Cheche, as quoted by the club’s website.
"I have worked immensely hard and even more when I was unattached, and this call-up is the end result of all that hard work."
The experienced defender has 35 caps for Kenya already and has scored twice for the national team. His last match was when Harambee Stars played Rwanda in 2021 in a World Cup qualifier.
Kenya won by a margin of 2-1, and this was their last match before they were suspended by FIFA. The suspension came over what the world governing body said was a third-party interference in the running of soccer in the country.
Cheche returned to Mathare United in the current mid-season and has so far played in three matches for the Slum Boys. He was part of the squad that secured vital victories over Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League matches.
On the national side, he will have to compete with Joseph Okumu of Gent, Brian Mandela of Mamelodi Sundowns, and Johnstone Omurwa of Estrela in Portugal.
Other summoned defenders are Eric Ouma and Collins Shichenje of Sweden’s AIK, Bandari’s Andrew and Mohamed Siraj, Cheche’s club teammate David Ochieng, Maurice Owino of KCB, Sweden, Daniel Anyembe of Viborg, Tusker’s Daniel Sakari, and Abud Omar of Kenya Police.
