World Athletics has cancelled the 2025 Road Running Championships due to unforeseen challenges in the planning process.

World Athletics has announced the cancellation of the 2025 edition of the World Road Running Championships.

The event was initially scheduled for September 26-28 in San Diego, California, centred around Balboa Park, but the 2025 edition has since been cancelled.

This comes after the San Diego Local Organising Committee held talks with World Athletics last month and opted not to host the event.

The move forced World Athletics to get into the process of finding a new host, and the committee responsible for that was to announce the host in no time.

Commenting on the decision for San Diego to withdraw from the World Athletics Road Running Championships, Tracy Sundlun, CEO of San Diego 25, noted that they were looking forward to hosting the event but things did not go as planned.

"We really looked forward to welcoming the running world to San Diego this September, but sadly it is not to be at this time,” she said.

“For now, all of us here on Team San Diego will do everything in our power to assist World Athletics in the seamless transition of the 2025 Championships to a new venue."

Why World Athletics postponed the event

World Athletics revealed that they held discussions with a series of alternative hosts and noted that some of them had great potential for hosting the event.

The athletics governing body further pointed out that they are still in talks with other potential hosts for other editions.

“While some of these discussions will continue for other editions of the event, the World Athletics Council has decided not to award the Championships to an alternative host this year due to lack of essential planning and preparation time required to cater for both elite and mass participation race elements,” World Athletics said in a statement.

Focus now shifts to the 2026 World Road Running Championships, to be held in Copenhagen from September 19 to 20.

World Athletics confirmed that already, 100,000 people have shown interest in the 35,000 spots available for the half-marathon distance.
