Usain Bolt has opened up on some of the things he learned from his late father Wellesley Bolt that he is now instilling in his three young children.
Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt has paid a glowing tribute to his late father Wellesley Bolt who passed away in March following a long illness.
Bolt and his family held his father’s funeral service on Sunday and was attended by track and field stars as well as Jamaican government officials.
Bolt eulogized his father as a kind man who was strict on discipline and good behavior, something that rubbed off on him, and he is also instilling in his three young children.

“All he did was give—no matter what. Anyone from Sherwood Content can tell you, even if he didn’t have it, he would give,” Bolt told the congregation as quoted by Sportsmax.

“No matter how old you were, if you came in and misbehaved, he’d tell you to leave. That’s how my dad was, and that’s how I’m trying to grow my kids—to respect, to understand, and to listen,” Bolt added on the need for respect that he is making sure his children follows.
Bolt also revealed how his late father shaped his athletics career by ensuring he was disciplined and dedicated to his craft throughout his successful stint.
“Throughout my life, I’ve worked hard and dedicated myself—especially to track and field—to be the best I possibly can. That’s one of the biggest lessons I learned from my dad: to work hard and be dedicated,” Bolt added of his father, who worked at the Coffee Board before running a famous shop in Sherwood Content where the family lived following his retirement.
“Having my own kids now, I definitely want to live up to his character and be the best I possibly can be to them, just like he was to me,” he said.

Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Deputy Prime Minister Horace Chang, Minister of Sport Olivia Grange, former Prime Minister Bruce Golding, and former Minister of Sport Natalie Neita were among those who attended the funeral as well as Bolt’s long-time coach Glen Mills and his former track colleague Nester Carter as well as cricket legend Chris Gayle.
